HOWTO: burn DVD-video with MCE

December 29, 2005

This holiday I figured out a way to burn DVD-video with my Microsoft Media Center 2005. By default ou can only burn a DVD-data with a MS-DVR format recording.

Simply download and install the Sonic Encoders from the HP website and burn your recorded TV to DVD-video.

This trick works on any MCE installation. I tried it on a clone system with a Dutch MCE.

Thank you HP ;-).

Review: LaCie Ethernet Disk mini

December 27, 2005

LaCie Ethernet Disk miniThe LaCie Ethernet Disk mini is an external USB 2.0 disk with Ethernet interface.

The content of the disk can be accessed through:

  • One single SMB share
  • FTP
  • HTTP
  • Appletalk
  • Bonjour

An embedded Linux offers a web-based GUI for remote management. Through this GUI networking, shares and users can be configured.

The disk is formatted in FAT by default and can also be formatted FAT32 and EXT3. Only the last format deals with files larger than 4GB.

The FTP throughput is about 3.120 KB/s. A reasonable performance for multimedia streaming ;-).

The disk are available in 250GB, 300GB, 400GB and 500GB.

Read more at LaCie.

If you have formatted the external disk with the EXT3 file system, you can still access it over USB2 by using onw of the following tools: Ext2 IFS for Windows or Explore2fs.

December 11, 2005

This weekend I found a great website by Robert Petruska with usefull VMware tools. Robert developed several VMware GUI’s around VMware’s products. The tools developed and available here are:

  • VMware DiskMount GUI: a graphical frontend for VMware’s Disk Mount
  • VMware DiskManager GUI: a graphical frontend for VMware’s vDiskManager
  • Virtual DiskFactory: a Graphical front-end for VMware’s vDiskManager, including advanced functions
  • VDKwin: a Graphical front-end for Ken Kato’s VDK utility
  • VMX Builder: an application for creating virtual machines

The last one is ideal for VMware Player creation of virtual machines.
